i once spent an entire road trip from LA to Phoenix and back listening to Corey Harris’ Mississippi to Mali album…been stuck on his music and musicianship ever since. here’s the bluesman with a live, stripped down take on “Honeysuckle”. nothing like a great voice over a single acoustic guitar. and check out the natural lighting during the last minute of this video…perfection.
honest music never goes out of style. i pulled this album out after having shelved it when some of his newer material came out, but i realize that i still can’t get over this song…especially in those moments where he belts out the lines “listen when / all of this around us falls over / i’ll tell you what we’re gonna do…” this is mr. Ray LaMontagne with an epic live performance of “Shelter” on BBC Four Sessions. listen for the breakdown with just the strings and his voice right before the last chorus section. that doesn’t happen on the album version, but it’s definitely the hightlight of this performance.
this is a composite of two photos from Saturday’s MAKE MUSIC PASADENA summer kickoff event at the Levitt Pavilion at Memorial Park in Downtown Pasadena. i’m blessed and grateful for having had the opportunity to share some of my favorite reggae tunes with an extremely eager, energetic and large crowd of about 1600. along with the late afternoon sunshine, it was quite an honor to warm up the park for Ghanaian Afroroots star ROCKY DAWUNI, soukous band BA (Big African Sound), KCRW’s main man GARTH TRINIDAD,and LA’s legendary DJ DREZ. Thank You to all the beautiful people in this photo for joining us to create a magical event. it should have been called Make MAGIC Pasadena!
