AFRO FUNKE’ PRESENTS
Music has always been the passion of Matt’s life. In his childhood days in Philadelphia, he first heard and understood musical arrangement by listening to Sly and the Family Stone. Amazed that so many sounds could come together and sound so brilliant he set out on a quest to see how it was done. Piano lessons were the beginning. When the family moved to California Matt, as a teenager joined the local rock band. At New York University he enrolled in the Music Business and Technology Program. Upon returning to California, he began Djing the “new” Hip Hop Music he heard while attending NYU. His underground club promotions turned out to be very successful, attracting close to 1,000 kids in downtown warehouses on some occasions. Funky Reggae (a Saturday Night Promotion) became the most popular of all of his clubs. Warner Records Exec, Benny Medina gave Matt his first record deal. To produce a record based on the music he dj’d at Funky Reggae. The record was a critical success including the debut of Queen Latifah on a duet with Daddy-O from Stetsasonic. Island Records’ Chris Blackwell then gave Matt his own Reggae Label “Peace Posse” where he recorded Reggae great… Eek a Mouse!
Matt then took the post of VP of A&R for Capitol Records. Working with The Beastie Boys, The Whispers, Melvin Van Peebles, KRS-ONE to name a few. After a brief stint at Motown as VP of Soundtracks, Matt decided to take a more creative route in the Music Business. Writing, Djing, Producing, and Marketing have been the focus as of late. Global Soul Sound System is Matt’s DJ System. He’s been flown to the Bahamas to DJ Michael Jordan’s celebrity charity golf tournament, and has dj’d for many celebrity hosted parties including George Clooney’s house party and old school funk jam for Lou Gossett’s 70th b-day. And recently DJ’d VH1’s Diva’s Support the Troops Concert at Miramar Marine Air Base for 20,000 troops and their families. Matt recently completed his 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training course and looks forward to blending his eclectic mixes to Yoga soon!
