Had another great outing at General Lee’s in the heart of LA’s Chinatown district this past Friday night. I’m proud to say that Friday’s crowd rallied and provided a little satisfaction and validation (as well as bragging rights!) thanks to the dance cipher they had going out on the floor–my first there in the three installments of my LATITUDE event thus far!
I’ll most likely have to skip the February installment on the 16th, so I’m hoping that whoever ends up covering for me keeps the momentum and the good vibes going. Stay tuned for announcements!
My monthly 3rd Thursday musical foray returns this week…CASA DE BAMBA! Our first two events went off fantastically in NOV and DEC of last year and we’re looking forward to continued growth in 2018. Helping us do it this month will be Brazilian (by way of Los Angeles) singer-songwriter and composer, TITA LIMA! I first had the pleasure of meeting her way back in 2007 at the old Lost Souls Cafe in DTLA (where the entrance to the Continental Club is now). We’re celebrating Tita’s birthday and she’s gifting us with a tribute to the incomparable GAL COSTA! As an added treat, LA’s top Afro-Brazilian dance theater ensemble, VIVER BRASIL, will be performing selections from their beloved repertoire of bold and beautiful movement work. PLUS, our friend SOZINHO MALANDRO aka Lalo Z joins Bobby and me on the stageside turntables!

See you on Thursday if you’re in LA!
Last week a friend of mine who owns a vintage apparel & accessories store in Claremont CA hired me to curate an xmas playlist similar to the sound of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Since it’s located right across the hall from the coffee bar where I often post up for many hours during the week, I visit her store to browse and shop regularly and really enjoy the music she’s playing on her mini stereo system.
Anyway, putting it together was kind of fun and she really dug the set so I finally decided to re-activate my Spotify page and add it as my first entry. While I chose to include a couple of songs that you might hear on KOST 103.5’s post-Halloween holiday repertoire (which is WAY too early of a start date, IMHO), and without trying to go ostentatiously deep, I went for a bluesy (but not too melancholy), swingin’ set that I think might be a pretty fresh take. I chose 18 tunes, but because I still needed an extra 15 minutes to fill out an 80-minute blank CD, I added four extra tunes from a great compilation called “An Austin Rhythm and Blues Christmas”. Check out my “Blue(s) Xmas” playlist via the link below:

This Friday night December 15th, I’m back mixin’ at General Lee’s Cocktail House in LA’s Chinatown district. Lovin’ the cool vibes at this spot. Those of you who follow my blog regularly may know that my buddy Mekonnen Garedew often invited me to drop a guest set at his HeartBeat Friday’s there. Now I’ve got my own thing going on at the spot, on a monthly basis as of late.
I’ve named the night ‘LATITUDE’ as the owner has given pretty much given me free reign over the selections. The only thing he did request (or perhaps did not request) when he called: “Don’t play any trap…I hate that shit.” Heart read completely. Last month, we started out with some free jazz and bebop, then into ‘acid jazz’, jazzy hip-hop, cool dancehall, uptempo afrobeats, disco, modern and future soul and more. Can’t wait to hear what places on the musical map we end up this Friday!
Anyway, I’m there from 10pm to 2am. It’s totally free, so come on through to vibe, sip and help me navigate through the music for a bit.
