sou loved | remix on the radio!

As I’m a huge fan of the Global Riddims / Groovalizacion Radio show out of Belgium, I’m extra thrilled that the La Junta Remix of “Sou” by Burkina Faso’s WUIWA (done by David Cardena aka ‘degruvme’ and yours truly) made it onto their most recent playlist! That in itself is a great honor, but even more so that it’s among some incredible company whose work I greatly admire and keep in regular rotation, including Seun Kuti, Antibalas, Thornato, Samba de Coco Raizes de Arcoverde (produced by Maga Bo), Nicola Conte & more. Much respect to Tony Heynen!!

Click the link below and have a listen on this fine Music Monday…and thereafter 🙂

latitude | friday march 16

FRIDAY MARCH 16th I’m back in my regular 3rd Friday slot at General Lee’s Cocktail House in LA’s Chinatown District with LATITUDE. I’ve enjoyed a lot of freedom to move around musically here and LA’s young Friday night crowds have been sticking around for the most part. Last time, I started the night by dropping the needle on Ahmad Jamal’s jazz piano classic “Poinciana”, made the trek through some UK modal jazz by way of Matthew Halsall, got into some iconic bebop material from Monk and Coltrane and on to jazzy, thoughtful hip-hop, soulful reggae and afro sounds. I also tend to touch on some disco, house and moody electronica from all over, and will occasionally throw the young weekend warriors a bone with some familiar tropical pop.

Anyway, grab some homies, come check it out and have a sip with me soon!

mind melting | aka NEW BRAZIL MIX!!

I’m honored to have recently been invited to share a guest deejay set on Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles by one of my favorite tastemakers on the LA airwaves, Mr. Michael Barnes. Michael has hosted his popular and eclectic music program on both of the city’s main public radio platforms, 89.9 FM KCRW and KPFK 90.7 FM, a show and accompanying blog both titled Melting Pot Radio. He’s currently on hiatus from doing his programs regularly, however in January and February thus far, he’s filled in for regular ‘One Track Mind’ host Kristi Lomax, who’ll be making her return to her long-time post at the station very soon.

The links below will allow you to stream and/or download each hour of the show. The first link takes you to Michael’s New Orleans/Mardi Gras inspired first hour (including a brief interview with yours truly), while the second link features my guest deejay set–a jazzy and funky take on Brazil, just in time for Carnaval week. You won’t find much of the typical samba or batucada sounds here, but rather the set highlights a handful of genres just as rhythmic and beautiful as the country’s more prominent sounds. Plus, what’s really cool about this appearance on One Track Mind is that it is in large part thanks to Kristi’s show back around the turn of the millenium that I learned to love Afrobeat and pan-African genres, helping set me on the path to all that I enjoy as a world music deejay/selector/collector.

I’ve also included the tracklist for my set below. Click and enjoy!
