friday october 25 | salsa on the alley

Dia de los Muertos season is just about upon us, so La Junta crew and me are excited to share that we’re back with one of our surprise hit events of last fall, and it’s right in our Pasadena stomping grounds!

Kicking off its Day of the Dead Celebration, Old Pasadena hosts ‘Salsa on the Alley, curated by LA cultural event producers La Junta and featuring a live performance with Son Mayor, an 11-piece ensemble that has been performing its classic salsa sound for more than three decades. The event takes place outdoor in one of Old Pasadena’s historic, urban alleyways–illuminated with unique calaveras lighting.
Free sugar-skull face painting is offered between 5:30-8:30pm!

My partner at La Junta–degruvme–and I will be cutting loose on the decks in the second room aka ‘The Stowaway’ with some soul, hip-hop and funk–realms we don’t always get to explore properly during our own heavily-themed Afro-Latin events. Check out the rest of the lineup and details:

With 50 home brewers on hand, ColdXela garnered the distinction as the largest gathering of Latino brewers ever. Be sure not to miss the country’s premiere Latino focused homebrew club SoCal Cerveceros & Cerveceras returning to Plaza De La Raza for the second installment of CYC FEST

CYC FEST DOS looks to put an emphasis on not only the emerging Latino craft beer culture, but food by showcasing an array of independent food vendors from Los Angeles County. Compton based chef, Juan Garcia, brings his Goat Mafia brand of birria inspired dishes. Goat Mafia is quickly becoming known for their creative smoked meat options. With a constant presence in the local art & craft scene, Chano’s Tacos out of East L.A. delivering mouth watering options. 90 second pizzas? Confirmed breweries: Bookwyrm Brewing, Burning Bridge Brewing, Cimarron Street’s Finest, Espada Brewing Company, Big Boys Brewing, Preston Brewing, & Tr3s Brew and more to be announced.

The day will feature 4 live bands and djs. We are fans of our local music scene and we want to showcase those talents as well. Junta Sound System djs bringing latin/world dance beats between sets. On the stage we will feature various genres. Reggae by SGV Vibes, Los Fauna with thier Latin Alt/Psyche Rock, Dyed Hydes from Dana Point bringing the indie Rock n’ Roll, and SMACK playing classic rock covers. Aside from several local bands and djs we will have the strolling mariachi returning once again.

The nonprofits, Plaza de la Raza & El Centro de Ayuda each have over three decades of servicing the local communities of East/Northeast Los Angeles, respectively. 100% of ticket sales will be go to both orgs in an effort to help support their continued work.
