I’m honored to have had a part in promoting the newly released song and video, Georgia On My Mind. This collaboration among East LA Latinx son jarocho band, Las Cafeteras, singer/violinist QVLN, and Tucson’s Sergio Mendoza (Orkesta Mendoza), flips the classic and beloved Ray Charles rendition into a cumbia-fied, beat-heavy, hi-hat laden affair aimed at turning out Black and Latino voters for Georgia’s critical runoff elections in early January.
A special shout out goes to my brother, deejay/producer degruvme, of La Junta LA for his excellent production work given the short timeline to develop and complete the project, as well as to everyone involved in the project.
Marina Soul Club Mix 017 is up now on Mixcloud! I originally curated the tracklist for inclusion on Yacht Rock Miami‘s “Smooth Gravy” Thanksgiving Day broadcast. Given the 2pm PST/5pm EST time slot, the mix’s uptempo, high energy kickoff seemed right on time to fight off the onset of our listeners’ food comas and/or to rev up their appetites for second helpings.
The vibes move from disco to ‘yacht soul’ to soft rock to jazzy pop, closing out with a couple of lovely reggae numbers. The tune Night Moves, written and originally recorded by Michael Franks and appearing on MSC Mix 010 , shows up once again, this time in a lively bossa jazz style by chanteuse, Dee Dee Bridgewater. Check out the full tracklist below. Much love and gratitude to Captain Juan Luv and his mates at Yacht Rock Miami for inviting Marina Soul Club LA to his radio platform.

Though I’m blogging about this here on December 1st, this sixteenth episode of Marina Soul Club Radio went up on Mixcloud back on November 13th. It starts off with a third MSC appearance by Daryl Hall & John Oates and their 1981 feel-good smash You Make My Dreams Come True. I heard it on television playing in the background during the 2020 Biden-Harris victory celebration and wanted to mark that moment in history here on the show. Besides, it’s a great pop tune and I’d been waiting for the right time to get it on the playlist.
I’d been looking for the right opportunity to insert a couple of other tunes that I’d repeatedly add and then delete because the surrounding musical context never seemed quite right for them. First is Barry Manilow‘s Let’s Get On With It–a great and unexpectedly fit entry into the realm of yacht rock, as well as the beloved Ace classic, How Long, which nestled nicely among songs 11-14 both in tempo and easiness.
We also find the MSC debut of celebrated yacht rock duo Nielsen/Pearson, a respective pair of luscious tunes by Bill Champlin and Seals & Crofts, an anachronistic but glorious 1992 hit by Neil Young (I wish he’d recorded it in the 70s!), plus a triad of sweet Fleetwood Mac-related goodies.
As this is one of my most recent mixes and hasn’t made nearly the number of ‘rotations’ on my laptop or iPod like other Marina Soul Club episodes, I think it’s going to become a favorite. I hope it becomes one of yours too. Enjoy.
