LA JUNTA, my deejay crew and music event of the same name, have announced the dates for our Summer 2017 run. We’ve been working hard to curate an amazing lineup of deejays, live bands and dance groups for our fifth summer season–and our second in DTLA. Yup…we’ll be back rockin’ the super fresh rooftop lounge at Don Chente Bar-Grill & Lounge, across from Staples Center. Above is our teaser flier showing the dates of our series, each show taking place on the LAST Sunday of each month from April through September. For this summer campaign, the La Junta team and I decided on a vintage futbol/soccer aesthetic. Soon you’ll see the flier announcing the lineup for our April 30th Kickoff Event. Can’t wait to show you, and of course, to see you at La Junta!!

I posted this on social media during his presidential farewell speech. These Barack Obama Jazz images, modeled after the iconic Blue Note Records album covers designed by Reid Miles, started to pop up way back during Obama’s historic first election run and during both his terms as the POTUS. A Facebook page dedicated to our first black President appeared and I found myself tripping over myself in delight over these “album covers” that hearken back to the days of our Jazz pioneers and the epitome of cool. I took as many as I could find, minus a few, and put them together in this square image. While Obama’s policies didn’t always go over well with even his most staunch supporters, I think history will show that he was one of the finest to ever hold the Office. One thing is for sure, no other President in recent history handled himself more presidentially, or more righteously, graciously and even stylishly. In these images, I’m certain of that. You are dearly missed, Mr. Obama!
You know the deal…2016 has been a helluva year. It’s unnecessary to list the losses from the music and entertainment worlds that we’ve suffered, or to rant about the upcoming challenges we will face in our country during the next four years, so I’m just going to leave these two images here in hopes that we can get together on this coming weekend and usher out what’s been the most upsetting of recent years. Hope to see you on Friday the 30th or on NYE Saturday!
It’s been over 9 weeks since the last La Junta event and the train of insane that is 2016 keeps chugging away and steamrolling us all with some deep losses and heavy challenges. Our crew are doing our best to pass the time until year’s end with various creative projects (Yukicito just stitched and sewed a new hat from scratch!) and by gathering to watch The Walking Dead on Sundays, but 2017 can’t come soon enough. And, of course, we miss you all terribly!
SOOOO…for a night of levity and festivity, and in the spirit of gettin’ together and gettin’ down as we love to do, we’re inviting you to our first ever public holiday event: La Junta’s UGLY XMAS SWEATER PARTY!!! La Cita Bar has graciously offered to be our host and we’re working together to create some fun. Dig out and don your ugliest, most ridiculous holiday attire to win our Ugly Sweater Contest and get ready for prizes and surprises. La Junta Sound System (aka Yukicito, degruvme & yours truly Glenn Red) will be in the mix all night long with some special guests joining in on the musical madness. It goes down on SUNDAY DECEMBER 18th!

I’m both excited and nervous about this latest AFRO FUNKÉ show called ‘AFRICA RISING’. I’m very eager to be part of the bill (as part of the Afro Funké Sound System deejay duo with JEREMY SOLE) and to hear and see the other performers, which include my my friends ROCKY DAWUNI, DEXTER STORY & WONDEM and special guest, legendary Congolese-Belgian Afropop artist MARIE DAULNE of ZAP MAMA!! I think that the quality of the lineup evoked what I think is some of my best work as a graphic designer, this flier pictured above. Thanks to Jeremy for adding some clean polish work to it! The show, presented by Afro Funké and 89.9 KCRW, takes place under the stars on SATURDAY OCTOBER 15th at the historic FORD THEATRES in Hollywood. The show starts at 7pm, with doors open and picnicking at 5pm. Please spread the word and make plans to attend!

Our final LA JUNTA summer event of 2016 falls on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH!! And we’re going out BIG with Los Angeles’ new but already beloved Selena tribute band, SELENAMOS! It takes place on the rooftop of our new home, DON CHENTE BAR-GRILL & LOUNGE in DTLA, right across from Staples Center. We’ll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Selena’s first gold record, which was also the first for any woman in Tejano music!

So, right on schedule and in keeping with past summers, I’ve managed to pull my disappearing act again. I don’t think I’ve posted anything for about two months or so. If any of you have ventured over to the sidebar of this blog, you may have noticed that I usually keep my deejaying schedule pretty up-to-date. A quick glance would tell you that I’ve been a pretty busy dude. In addition to preparing music and doing the requisite promotion duties for those respective events each week, I keep my days busy making fliers for both my gigs and for other peoples’ parties. Here is a small handful of some flier work I’ve done this summer. You may see me post a couple of these images again, along with descriptions of the particular event as they get close. Maybe I’ll see you at a few 😉
