I’ve also been super busy these just these past few weeks designing promo images for a few clients with upcoming events in August:
Several weeks ago, I was honored when my friend Beto González asked me to take over the design campaign for an upcoming show he’d been working on. Below is what I came up with based on his great ideas. Recently, I’ve also been added on to this amazing show happening at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood CA this Friday August 4th. The show begins at 8:30pm, but I’ll be out on the plaza spinning a deejay set of Brazilian music and other tunes from around the world beginning at 6:30pm. It’s another great honor to be part of this night of Resistance music that’s good for the soul, given the seemingly many parallels with America’s political climate and that of Brazil during the mid 1960s thru the mid 1980s. Check out this great article by Ivan Fernandez posted this morning in the LA Weekly:
So grab your tickets at www.fordtheatres.org and come out early with a picnic basket and some wine and make a great evening of it. I’d love to see you there. ❤
Can’t wait to rock a guest set in LA Chinatown on Saturday night with my heavyweight vinyl diggin’ friends from the BARRIO FUNKY crew!! Even more sweet is that the featured live bands, YANGA and EL SANTO GOLPE are also friends with whom I’ve worked on some great shows in recent years. With Chinatown currently showing the sweeping effects of gentrification in LA, a big ¡Salud! to Barrio Funky for keeping it 100% wax with real music and real folks holding down the dance floor each month.
Speaking of wax, I enjoy opportunities like this, to keep it old school and go back to my roots by playing an all-vinyl set. I still buy vinyl weekly, but it just got tedious preselecting, packing and then hauling crates or bags full of records when I began playing multiple nights per week. However, you’ll almost always see at least one bag of wax behind the turntables with me whenever I’m out deejaying. Come through and join us at upstairs at the Grand Star Jazz Club if you feel the need to boogie this weekend!
MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU and MAY the 5th be in DTLA with me. Got two spots where we can clink glasses:
First I’ll be here at MEZCALERO DTLA from 7:30 to 10pm
Then heading over to EL DORADO BAR DTLA to join my fam LA JUNTA as we sip and get down into the wee hours.
LA JUNTA, my deejay crew and music event of the same name, have announced the dates for our Summer 2017 run. We’ve been working hard to curate an amazing lineup of deejays, live bands and dance groups for our fifth summer season–and our second in DTLA. Yup…we’ll be back rockin’ the super fresh rooftop lounge at Don Chente Bar-Grill & Lounge, across from Staples Center. Above is our teaser flier showing the dates of our series, each show taking place on the LAST Sunday of each month from April through September. For this summer campaign, the La Junta team and I decided on a vintage futbol/soccer aesthetic. Soon you’ll see the flier announcing the lineup for our April 30th Kickoff Event. Can’t wait to show you, and of course, to see you at La Junta!!
Check out our Facebook Page HERE.
The fellas from one of my favorite bands in Los Angeleas–LA CHAMBA–have invited me onto the deejay lineup for their GoFundMe campaign launch. I’m thrilled and honored to support the release of their upcoming album, Ecos de la Selva and beseech all of you to check out this fantastic band join us as we crowdfund the pressing, packaging and distribution of thier first full-length album. Please watch their cool campaign promo video below and see the posted flier and links for details on the Wednesday MARCH 15th event happening at LA CITA bar in DTLA. I’ll be there with fellow deejays FRESKO and THE GETDOWN COLLECTIVE and look forward to live performances by sonidero cumbia sensations ZAPOTECA ROOTS and, of course, LA CHAMBA!!
The event is hosted by Urban Badlands and La Mina Oro.
You know the deal…2016 has been a helluva year. It’s unnecessary to list the losses from the music and entertainment worlds that we’ve suffered, or to rant about the upcoming challenges we will face in our country during the next four years, so I’m just going to leave these two images here in hopes that we can get together on this coming weekend and usher out what’s been the most upsetting of recent years. Hope to see you on Friday the 30th or on NYE Saturday!
