on the rise.

africa-rising-poster-720x1104

I’m both excited and nervous about this latest AFRO FUNKÉ show called ‘AFRICA RISING’. I’m very eager to be part of the bill (as part of the Afro Funké Sound System deejay duo with JEREMY SOLE) and to hear and see the other performers, which include my my friends ROCKY DAWUNI, DEXTER STORY & WONDEM and special guest, legendary Congolese-Belgian Afropop artist MARIE DAULNE of ZAP MAMA!! I think that the quality of the lineup evoked what I think is some of my best work as a graphic designer, this flier pictured above. Thanks to Jeremy for adding some clean polish work to it! The show, presented by Afro Funké and 89.9 KCRW, takes place under the stars on SATURDAY OCTOBER 15th at the historic FORD THEATRES in Hollywood. The show starts at 7pm, with doors open and picnicking at 5pm. Please spread the word and make plans to attend!

I’m so infinitely grateful that we’re still able to hold these sweaty get-togethers with you a few times a year, even two years after ending our run as LA’s premier world music affair. We’re still looking forward to big things in the coming year. Above is the flier that on which Jeremy and I collaborated.

In addition to Jeremy Sole and me holding it down on the turntables, we’ve got a superb shortlist of talent coming through to bless the festivities:

Live percussion by KAHLIL CUMMINGS (Balandugu Kan, Capofresh, EthioCali / LA)
Live dance by NADRA EHRMAN (Afro Fusion Dance / Santa Barbara)
Live painting by NGENE MWAURA (Kenya)

Facebook Invite

…and it feels so good.

Some of you may remember the word that precedes the lyric above (courtesy of Peaches & Herb, or whomever wrote the song), but it definitely describes the way I feel about getting together with my Afro Funké family members–those on both sides of the turntables. What makes it even more special is that we’ll be together for the first time under the LA evening sky, out at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena. The event will mark our first move outside of the traditional night club setting, as well as our first venture together as a team outside of the westside/Santa Monica, across to the northeast corner of LA. To boot, we’ve got a fun and energetic opening act in Brazilian drum troupe BATALA LOS ANGELES. They’ll have the crowd gettin’ down big just in time for my boys JUNGLE FIRE to light up the stage with their hard-hitting afro-latin funk! Hope you get to join us! JUNE 21st 7:30pm.

**flyer: yours truly on the groundwork, Jeremy Sole on the perfect trimming and buffing.

Last Thursday, DJ NEWLIFE breezed into town from the Windy City and inspired the AFRO FUNKÉ dance floor with a bumpin’ set of feelgood rhythms from around the globe. It was one of those love-charged AF nights where all the goodness came about steadily, with the magic being conjured by the confluence of everybody’s positive vibrations throughout the evening. LOVE!

This week, we welcome a staple of LA’s Brazilian event scene for his first time behind the decks at Afro Funke’. Axé!

guest deejay:
NEWLIFE
(FEx/ Chicago)

He wasn’t born in Brazil, Ghana, Jamaica, India or any other foreign land but these places, and many more, were all born into him. His appreciation for global and electronic music has been apparent in his sets ever since he began DJing at the age of 13, and it has lead him on world-wide journeys to gain a deeper understanding behind the cultures from which all of this music originates. As founder and resident of Chicago’s FEx (Foreign Exchange) party, he has gained considerable recognition for his earthquake sounds and having a guaranteed floor filled Saturday night party where the people come out to skank, bollywood, samba, hi-life, break and juke all in one place.

<<rwd<< Afro Funké 04.19.2012: Tadasana Festival Kickoff Party feat. DJ DREZ & EARTHRISE SOUNDSYSTEM!!

WOWWW!!! We all might be sweating still after last Thursday’s TADASANA FESTIVAL KICKOFF PARTY at AFRO FUNKE’! Massive THANK YOU’s to the large and inspired crowd who got downer than down to a heavy, heavy set of live percussion and global electronica by NYC’s EARTHRISE SOUNDSYSTEM! Had the night ended there, we could have headed home smiling contently, but it was only prelude to the deep metaphysical vibrations that LA luminary DJ DREZ tapped into with his incredible set of JAHTA BEAT sounds. WHAT A NIGHT!!!!

The Windy City gets well-represented this week as we welcome a fine world music tastemaker to join our beloved resident deejay (and Chicago native) JEREMY SOLE on the wheels!

TADASANA YOGA FESTIVAL KICKOFF PARTY

featuring:

DJ DREZ

Drez delves into blending yesterday’s roots with the innovative urban beats of today. His gradual evolution from Hip Hop DJ to World Music Taste Maker has blossomed a litany of accomplishments that have garnered Drez the title as one of the highest ranking DJs and producers in LA’s underground music scene.

When he isn’t in the studio producing, spinning at some underground Hip Hop club, or having impromptu late night jam sessions with local artists, you might find him on his mat. Drez is a certified yoga instructor who teaches privately in Los Angeles and spends time helping fellow musicians with their yoga practice at home and when away on tour. In addition, you will see him djing yoga retreats and world music festivals from Europe to Asia or catch the latest on his accomplishments in the pages of magazines ranging from The Source to Yoga Journal. None of this is unusual for a true renaissance man like DJ Drez.

&

EARTHRISE SOUND SYSTEM

EarthRise SoundSystem is the shared musical vision of producer David “Duke Mushroom” Schommer and DJ/writer/yogi Derek Beres. Utilizing Duke’s multi-instrumental background and worldly percussion with Derek’s concepts of “Global Beat Fusion,” this duo started collaborating energies to create music for movement in late 2008. In 2010 they released their first full length album, The
Yoga Sessions: EarthRise SoundSystem (Yoga Organix/White Swan), which has garnered praise by the NY Times, Yoga Journal, MTV, Boston Globe, Yoga International, LA Yoga and many others.

As remixers, ERSS has reworked such talent as Vieux Farka Toure, Femi Kuti, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Natacha Atlas, Nickodemus, Deva Premal, MC Yogi and others. The duo has recently completed work on the documentary film, ‘DMT: The Spirit Molecule,’ with Duke scoring the film and Derek contributing as Music Supervisor. Together they wrote the epic theme song, “Labyrinths” featuring Carol C of Si*Sé.

AFRO FUNKE’ Presents

guest deejays:
EXPO & PHOREYZ

Expo (Escapism / Root Down / Blunt Boogie Records) is a Los Angeles raised DJ who first got started on the decks at the age of 13, avidly collecting vinyl and creating homemade mixtapes. He first stepped into the club scene at the age of 18, often spinning at venues he wasn’t legally allowed in. Expo started paying dues organizing his own events as well as taking part in a circuit of guerilla late-night loft & rooftop parties across LA. In 2005, after being taken under the wing of the late great DJ Dusk, Expo was appointed as the youngest member of the world famous Root Down Soundsystem, one of LA’s longest running Hip-Hop/Funk nights. Over the years he has become a hometown favorite amongst many Angelinos and earned respect from several heavyweight veterans and fans worldwide. As a strong-arm crate digger he has amassed a collection of more than 15,000 records; his diverse stockpile of wax ensures that no matter what kind of crowd he’s playing for, he has the party covered with selections of hip-hop, funk, reggae, Latin, rock, or anything else to get ’em on the floor and keep ’em there. Expo has had the opportunity to share his talent in several areas including Berlin, New York, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Austin, Houston, The Bay Area, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Maui, and much more. Expo has rocked crowds at SXSW, Long Beach Funk Festival, The Do-Over, Make It Funky Festival, X-Games, and last year he competed in the Red Bull Thre3style in LA, earning 3rd place. He has had the pleasure of sharing the bill with such luminaries as Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Big Daddy Kane, Z-Trip, The BeatJunkies, Cut Chemist, Gaslamp Killer, Charles Wright, Large Professor, and countless others. You can catch Expo every Monday night at the LA chapter of Motown On Mondays, as well as every 4th Saturday in LA with Phoreyz at Escapism. Be sure not to miss Expo in a town near you! To find out more about him, visit: djexpo.com or www.facebook.com/expothedj. You can catch several of his mixes at www.mixcrate.com/expothedj

&

Phoreyz is New York born, Los Angeles bred Dj and producer that began collecting records at the early age of 12. In 2001, he started Djing in Los Angeles, and has since built a solid reputation amongst fans and his heavyweight peers for his unique style on the turntables and his impeccable selection of music. Nowhere is this more apparent than the numerous mixtapes and remixes that have achieved domestic and international acclaim.

His mixtape arsenal includes mixes for Mochilla, Undefeated, Stones Throw, Frank 151, and Dissizit, among others. Known as one of LA’s premiere Party Rockers, Phoreyz’s skills as a DJ has taken him to Japan, New York, San Francisco, Mexico City, Phoenix, Denver, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and every premiere party in Southern California.
On many occasions, he has shared the stage with the likes of Z-Trip, Nu-mark, Quantic, The Beat Junkies, Rich Medina, and was a performance dj for KRS ONE in 2010.

He has held down his position as one of the main resident DJs at the world famous Get Back in Las Vegas for the past eight years, and also has additional residencies in Los Angeles, and at Insert Coin(s) also located in Las Vegas. Phoreyz has also become one of LA’s most sought after talents in the studio and has received global recognition for his original tracks and remixes of Radiohead, Lenny Kravitz, Amerie, Beyonce, and many more. As a producer he has collaborated and recorded with acts such as DMC (from Run Dmc), Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Elzhi (from Slum Village), and numerous others. Phoreyz was known as one of LA’s secret weapons, but it looks like the secret is getting out.

<<rwd<< Afro Funké 04.05.2012: Guest deejay PANAMAMI (Bodega, LA)!!

The fortunate few hundred folks on last week’s AFRO FUNKÉ dance floor witnessed firsthand what we’ve known all along…that the ladies have a truly special touch in our deejay booth! Bodega Soundsystem’s DJ PANAMAMI came through, took over the turntables and took us for a wild spin through fresh modern sounds of Latin America, Africa and the Carribean. Joined by surprise guest, violin madman QUETZAL GUERRERO, our Girl from Panama effortlessly treated the crowd to nearly two hours of the complex rhythms and heavy percussion sounds on which she has built a solid reputation. Whewww!

This Thursday we continue our amazing April, proud to welcome back two guests considered by many to be “deejays’ deejays”… DO NOT MISS what will be an incredible evening featuring a four-turntable beatdown by our talented brothers from LA’s monthly ESCAPISM event!!!

AFRO FUNKE’ Presents

guest deejay:
PANAMAMI

After a six year stint on the East coast, DJ Panamami returned to her hometown of Los Angeles to quickly become one of Southern California’s most sought-after DJ’s. Panamami’s sharp turntable skills and broad taste in music has resulted in gigs across California, from San Francisco to San Diego. She is also one of the few American Dj’s who have had the pleasure of spinning for crowds in South Korea. It is in L.A., however, that Dj Panamami continues to truly make her mark. She has held several residencies, including a rotating Dj position for The Grasshopper at Little Temple in Silverlake, alongside hosts Badru Umi and famed LA rapper Aceyalone. You can currently find Panamami spinning world music–-from Brazilian beats to dancehall and cumbia–at Bodega, the fastest growing party in the city of Los Angeles.
