roof with a view.

LA JUNTA, my deejay crew and music event of the same name, have announced the dates for our Summer 2017 run. We’ve been working hard to curate an amazing lineup of deejays, live bands and dance groups for our fifth summer season–and our second in DTLA. Yup…we’ll be back rockin’ the super fresh rooftop lounge at Don Chente Bar-Grill & Lounge, across from Staples Center. Above is our teaser flier showing the dates of our series, each show taking place on the LAST Sunday of each month from April through September. For this summer campaign, the La Junta team and I decided on a vintage futbol/soccer aesthetic. Soon you’ll see the flier announcing the lineup for our April 30th Kickoff Event. Can’t wait to show you, and of course, to see you at La Junta!!

marching forward.

Thursday, April 7th, marks the beginning of AFRO FUNKÉ’s third ‘post-weekly’ year, meaning that we’ve continued to host our event beyond its incarnation as a legendary Thursday evening fixture on the west side of Los Angeles. Since stepping back and ending that 10-year long tenure in late 2013, we’ve given ourselves room to breathe, to reimagine, and to grow. In 2014 and 2015, we were able to throw a handful of very well-attended one-off/’pop-up’ events in parts of the city beyond our original Santa Monica locale, and this year looks to be even brighter! Please come out and reunite with Jeremy, Cary, Rocky and me this week at our beloved and true home, ZANZIBAR! We’ll have some live dance performances and drumming, as well as live painting on the stage. Say YEAH YEAH!

This is the flier that I designed, to which Jeremy lent his golden touch before letting it fly. We’re a pretty good team behind the turntables too 😉

still funky.

I’m so infinitely grateful that we’re still able to hold these sweaty get-togethers with you a few times a year, even two years after ending our run as LA’s premier world music affair. We’re still looking forward to big things in the coming year. Above is the flier that on which Jeremy and I collaborated.

In addition to Jeremy Sole and me holding it down on the turntables, we’ve got a superb shortlist of talent coming through to bless the festivities:

Live percussion by KAHLIL CUMMINGS (Balandugu Kan, Capofresh, EthioCali / LA)
Live dance by NADRA EHRMAN (Afro Fusion Dance / Santa Barbara)
Live painting by NGENE MWAURA (Kenya)

…and it feels so good.

Some of you may remember the word that precedes the lyric above (courtesy of Peaches & Herb, or whomever wrote the song), but it definitely describes the way I feel about getting together with my Afro Funké family members–those on both sides of the turntables. What makes it even more special is that we’ll be together for the first time under the LA evening sky, out at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena. The event will mark our first move outside of the traditional night club setting, as well as our first venture together as a team outside of the westside/Santa Monica, across to the northeast corner of LA. To boot, we’ve got a fun and energetic opening act in Brazilian drum troupe BATALA LOS ANGELES. They’ll have the crowd gettin’ down big just in time for my boys JUNGLE FIRE to light up the stage with their hard-hitting afro-latin funk! Hope you get to join us! JUNE 21st 7:30pm.

**flyer: yours truly on the groundwork, Jeremy Sole on the perfect trimming and buffing.

<<rwd<< MAR 05 2014: ECLÉCTICA Residents' Night!!

I threw together this simple flyer for Wednesday night’s Ecléctica event. Black & white…so simple, effective, balanced, and works together perfectly…

Hope to see you there! Here’s the Facebook invite page.

ECLECTICA INVITE 851x315

Happy March, Everyone!

If you’re feeling like we are, then you’re extremely grateful for the rain we’ve been blessed with here in the early days of this month…we sure needed it!

In fact, we’re so pleased to have this little bit that we’d like to get together and ask for more. Now that’s it’s time for the next Ecléctica, lets get together and MAKE IT RAIN!! We’re making this one a residents’ night, so no matter what we’ll be keeping things warm inside with the music.

HUGE THANKS to everyone who came out to the RITO collaboration event with La Junta a few weeks ago. BEAUTIFUL NIGHT 😀

See you Wednesday!

LOVE,
Reyes, Daniel & Glenn

ECLECTICA FEB 14 FLYER FINAL

Cheers, Family!

We’re checkin’ in to say hello in the middle of us all digging our soles into the earth and steadying ourselves for everything 2014 has begun to bring. Reyes, Glenn and Daniel want to once again thank you and all of our Capricorn friends who celebrated birthdays for making our special opening event at Trópico de Nopal in January so amazing. WHAT A NIGHT!

The first Wednesday of February is fast approaching, so it’s also time to invite you to gather with us back at Eastside Luv Wine Bar for the next ECLÉCTICA! Some special guests from Fresno will be making the trip down the Grapevine to share the magic of their ‘DULCE UP-FRONT’ events. We’re looking forward to a night of new sounds and a return to having live painting in the room. We’d love to see you all again!

<<rwd<< JAN 4 2014: ECLÉCTICA 2014 OPENING CELEBRATION

This is the flyer that I created for the first Ecléctica event of 2014. It’s going to be a special night as we move, for one night only, to beloved Echo Park venue TROPICO DE NOPAL. On this night, we’ll celebrate our many Capricorn friends, including my fellow resident deejay REYES RODRIGUEZ.

Helping us to kick the year off correctly will be headliners THE SWEENEY BROTHERS BAND performing live and eastside favorite DJ FRESKO. Our friends from FORRÓ IN L.A. will also lead a Brazilian forró dance class in the 8pm hour for those who’d like to start the new year trying something new and cool.

ECLÉCTICA will return to its usual First Wednesdays slot at Eastside Luv in February.
