thursday october 10 | sariyah idan – live

Looking forward to being back at the Mayfair Hotel in Los Angeles on Thursday October 10th, first gig there since rocking the Big Fatty 20th Anniversary celebration on Mardi Gras night earlier this year. This time out, I’m droppin’ sets in support of singer/songwriter Sariyah Idan, celebrating the release of her debut solo album ‘Breaking Shadows’.

A night to celebrate the release of Sariyah’s debut solo LP BREAKING SHADOWS with a full band concert, other artist and DJs. BREAKING SHADOWS addresses love, power, and patriarchy from a woman’s perspective and blends multiple American and world music genres in Sariyah’s thoughtful and provoking style.

SARIYAH IDAN
Following the release of her “Deeper Than Skin EP” and “Not Afraid Mixtape”, Sariyah just finished recording her debut solo LP “Breaking Shadows” at studios in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Lisbon. Jazz and folk trained, hip-hop educated, and influenced by her Jewish roots, Sariyah Idan embodies fiery sensuality rooted in cultural, social and verbal poetry. A New York bred Los Angeles/Berlin based independent singer-songwriter, producer, and bandleader, Sariyah grew up touring as a singer and dancer in the world folk ensemble The Vanaver Caravan. Sariyah was opened to a global awareness, through her work with the Vanavers, La Mama experimental theater club in NYC and Italy, and as a spoken word poet at venues like the Nuyorican. The sonic tapestry of her music is an expression of both multicultural urban identity and cultural activism. Her poetic lyrics and vocals recently featured on first nations hip hop artist Artson’s top charting album “Brave Star”, Dumi RIGHT’s album “Doing It The Right Way”, DJ Haj I Ji’s EP “Reports Of My Demise”, and on Vienna based dub/reggae Dubblestandart’s album “Woman In Dub”.

thursday august 15 | tamar ilana

I’m stoked to be back performing an opening deejay set at the Skirball Cultural Center for their annual Sunset Concerts series! I’ll be behind the turntables setting the vibe for Tamar Ilana & the Ventanas in their Los Angeles debut! Come out at 6:30pm to hear the set; the band goes on around 8pm.

About the band:

Fronted by powerhouse vocalist and dancer Tamar Ilana, the Toronto-based Ventanas reimagine age-old Mediterranean melodies and flamenco grooves.

Inspired by a childhood touring the world with her mother, an ethnomusicologist, Ilana sings about migration and identity in Ladino, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hebrew, French, Romani, and Arabic. Be enchanted by their dynamic mix of contemporary interpretations of ancient ballads and original compositions.

8PM | FREE with RSVP here.
