friday february 28 | rum-n-sugar

Baaba Maal to Burna Boy. Erasmo Carlos to Emicida. Ray Baretto to Rosalía. Bar-Kays to Kaytranada. Rum-N-Sugar is back at General Lee’s Cocktail House in Chinatown this Friday night February 28th. Once again I’ll be rockin’ the upstairs lounge with vintage and modern sounds from Africa to the Americas. The January edition was fiyah with the new sound system so I’m ready to go even deeper this month! The needle drops at 10pm and it’s free all night…early arrival suggested!

friday february 14 | pajama jam

For those of us here in LA, it’s thus far been a solemn and heartbreaking start to 2020 with the sudden losses of people who have meant so much to our city and to our individual circles of friends and family. Fortunately, we’re at the start of a new month, and with it, the hope of abundance and good tidings that may help us put our hearts back together.

Well, it turns out that our next PIÑA event falls on Friday February 14th (Valentine’s Day!) and we’re determined to make it fun and unique. Sooo, we’re inviting you to dress down…waaayyy down…and join us for the PIÑA PAJAMA JAM!! Yup. Come dance the night away in your favorite sleepwear to the sounds of La Junta resident deejays degruvme, Yukicito & Glenn Red and our special guest from world renowned online music program Expedition RadioBIG BAD BABY BUBBA!

NOTE: The emphasis is on sleep’wear’. You gotta have pj’s on (or regular clothes for those coming from V-Day dinner)…or something comparable (sorry to the freeballers who like to sleep in the buff!). And footwear…because every now and then a glass breaks.

See you on 2/14 with lots of love!

friday january 17 | rum-n-sugar

After a long hiatus from hosting events at General Lee’s Cocktail House in LA’s Chinatown district, I made my return at the end of last year with two dates–first in October and the other in November. This Friday January 17 marks my first Chinatown appearance of 2020, and I’ve branded it ‘Rum-N-Sugar’, to acknowledge the lands where African and Latin music are deeply rooted. I’ll be mixing classic and current expressions of this pan-African music: Fela to Falz; Mighty Sparrow to Machel Montano; Celia Cruz to Nicola Cruz; Marley to Movado and James Brown to Jay-Z for example. See you on Friday!
