friday april 20 | latitude

My monthly music excursion known as LATITUDE returns this Friday night April 20th to General Lee’s Cocktail House in Chinatown Los Angeles! Alongside the jazz, rare groove, hip hop and groove heavy pan-African tunes that I’ve been mixing, this 420 edition will find me leaning into some extra reggae and dub tunes for the occasion. So roll (in however many ways that means to you)!

Thursday, April 7th, marks the beginning of AFRO FUNKÉ’s third ‘post-weekly’ year, meaning that we’ve continued to host our event beyond its incarnation as a legendary Thursday evening fixture on the west side of Los Angeles. Since stepping back and ending that 10-year long tenure in late 2013, we’ve given ourselves room to breathe, to reimagine, and to grow. In 2014 and 2015, we were able to throw a handful of very well-attended one-off/’pop-up’ events in parts of the city beyond our original Santa Monica locale, and this year looks to be even brighter! Please come out and reunite with Jeremy, Cary, Rocky and me this week at our beloved and true home, ZANZIBAR! We’ll have some live dance performances and drumming, as well as live painting on the stage. Say YEAH YEAH!

This is the flier that I designed, to which Jeremy lent his golden touch before letting it fly. We’re a pretty good team behind the turntables too 😉

“A veteran of local LA bands such as The Mojo Filters, The Belle Isle (which featured members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Love Grenades, Black Sugar (members of whom are now in Vintage Trouble), & Stereo Action Unlimited, Clifton’s start as a DJ came about because of his band memberships. Often asked to guest DJ shows that one of his bands played, DJ’ing soon took over and became his main vocation.

In his time as a DJ, Clifton (aka DJ Soft Touch) maintained a six year residency at the Beauty Bar (RIP) with DJ Dia (Café’ Bleu, Bang, Club Underground, Super Soul Sundays), was a part of Chinatown’s legendary indie dance club Club Transistor, and also held residency at famed Britpop night Club Underground.”
