on the rise.

I’m both excited and nervous about this latest AFRO FUNKÉ show called ‘AFRICA RISING’. I’m very eager to be part of the bill (as part of the Afro Funké Sound System deejay duo with JEREMY SOLE) and to hear and see the other performers, which include my my friends ROCKY DAWUNI, DEXTER STORY & WONDEM and special guest, legendary Congolese-Belgian Afropop artist MARIE DAULNE of ZAP MAMA!! I think that the quality of the lineup evoked what I think is some of my best work as a graphic designer, this flier pictured above. Thanks to Jeremy for adding some clean polish work to it! The show, presented by Afro Funké and 89.9 KCRW, takes place under the stars on SATURDAY OCTOBER 15th at the historic FORD THEATRES in Hollywood. The show starts at 7pm, with doors open and picnicking at 5pm. Please spread the word and make plans to attend!

marching forward.

Thursday, April 7th, marks the beginning of AFRO FUNKÉ’s third ‘post-weekly’ year, meaning that we’ve continued to host our event beyond its incarnation as a legendary Thursday evening fixture on the west side of Los Angeles. Since stepping back and ending that 10-year long tenure in late 2013, we’ve given ourselves room to breathe, to reimagine, and to grow. In 2014 and 2015, we were able to throw a handful of very well-attended one-off/’pop-up’ events in parts of the city beyond our original Santa Monica locale, and this year looks to be even brighter! Please come out and reunite with Jeremy, Cary, Rocky and me this week at our beloved and true home, ZANZIBAR! We’ll have some live dance performances and drumming, as well as live painting on the stage. Say YEAH YEAH!

This is the flier that I designed, to which Jeremy lent his golden touch before letting it fly. We’re a pretty good team behind the turntables too 😉

LA WEEKLY gave the upcoming AFRO FUNKÉ event a little (but much appreciated!) love in this morning’s online music posts. Take a minute to check out the gracious blurb by Lina Lecaro.

And if you think you might make it, here’s the Facebook Event Page for DECEMBER 3rd’s AFRO FUNKÉ getdown. We would love to be with you on this special night!

still funky.

I’m so infinitely grateful that we’re still able to hold these sweaty get-togethers with you a few times a year, even two years after ending our run as LA’s premier world music affair. We’re still looking forward to big things in the coming year. Above is the flier that on which Jeremy and I collaborated.

In addition to Jeremy Sole and me holding it down on the turntables, we’ve got a superb shortlist of talent coming through to bless the festivities:

Live percussion by KAHLIL CUMMINGS (Balandugu Kan, Capofresh, EthioCali / LA)
Live dance by NADRA EHRMAN (Afro Fusion Dance / Santa Barbara)
Live painting by NGENE MWAURA (Kenya)

…and it feels so good.

Some of you may remember the word that precedes the lyric above (courtesy of Peaches & Herb, or whomever wrote the song), but it definitely describes the way I feel about getting together with my Afro Funké family members–those on both sides of the turntables. What makes it even more special is that we’ll be together for the first time under the LA evening sky, out at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena. The event will mark our first move outside of the traditional night club setting, as well as our first venture together as a team outside of the westside/Santa Monica, across to the northeast corner of LA. To boot, we’ve got a fun and energetic opening act in Brazilian drum troupe BATALA LOS ANGELES. They’ll have the crowd gettin’ down big just in time for my boys JUNGLE FIRE to light up the stage with their hard-hitting afro-latin funk! Hope you get to join us! JUNE 21st 7:30pm.

**flyer: yours truly on the groundwork, Jeremy Sole on the perfect trimming and buffing.

<<rwd<< Afro Funké 11.14.2013: Live performance by latin reggae sensation ALIKA (Argentina)!!

Thursday night, AFRO FUNKÉ LIVE is proud to present Argentina’s dancehall & reggae star…

ALIKA

Alika gained recognition as a fiercely conscious voice emanating from Latin America, writing direct lyrics of respect, dignity and selfconfidence, while also recounting common issues found in many of the third world “barrios” of Latin America.

Her charisma and presence on stage have allowed her to take her show to festivals, theaters, clubs, schools, hospitals and even prisions in different cities arround the world—including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, United States of America. France, Spain and Andorra.—marking a truly amazing career for someone who to this day remains an independent artist.

Alika has five studio albums to date and is credited with having created some of the biggest reggae anthems in the latin reggae world. Tunes such as Ejercito Despierta on the World A Music/Jamrock Riddim (with several million Youtube views) have helped establish Alika as an international Reggae star and have helped place latin Reggae on the worldwide map. A further attestant to this is Alika’s 5th album, which was a collaborative effort with world-reknown dub producer Mad Professor. The 2009 album, entitled ¨Mad Professor meets Alika¨, was entirely produced by the genius of dub himself.

In September of 2007 Alika launched her own exclusive clothing line-Alika Tresde -which has received great accolades. The line is available in Argentina through the widely successful retail outfit Isabel la Catolica, with stores located throughout the country. In August of 2009 Alika also introduced her own signature model of sunglasses developed by world acclaimed manufacturers VULK, currently available in Argentina and Mexico.
