HUGE THANKS to Azul Amaral and the team at Grand Park Los Angeles for hosting this epic milestone event on behalf of Afro Funké.
Huge thanks to all who were part of last Thursday’s AFRO FUNKÉ 2018 Springtime Celebration, performers and eventgoers alike! What a beautiful night!! Special thanks to the homie Eric Parsons aka DJ Elixir who came down from Ojai to deejay the upstairs Townhouse lounge in Venice CA, not just because he put down a solid set behind the turntables and mixer, but he’s also a top notch photographer who shot the great pix in the gallery below. Check out a few of the random photos he took downstairs and outside while he wasn’t droppin’ the jams upstairs. Unfortunately, he had to miss most of Nickodemus’ set since they were slotted to play the same hours, but Nico managed to slip into one pic during the end-of-night sidewalk talk 🙂 Enjoy, and stay tuned for the announcement of the next Afro Funké getdown!
Thursday March 29 marks AFRO FUNKÉ’s first event of 2018, certain to be a colossal one as Brooklyn’s NICKODEMUS–Wonderwheel Recordings chief and creator of the legendary NYC to worldwide ‘Turntables on the Hudson’ events–makes his return to our deejay booth!! Longtime fans of Afro Funké will remember that Nickodemus was part of two of the most memorable nights on our dance floor at the old Zanzibar venue, especially as headliner of 2011’s 8-Year Anniversary celebration. His fluency in a broad spectrum of genres and his rhythmic, uptempo repertoire of beats and melodies from all over the world have made him one of the most sought-after and well traveled deejays since the 90s. I’m completely honored to serve as the opening deejay for both Nickodemus and my longtime AF partner in sublime, JEREMY SOLE on what will be an incredible night of music, dance and togetherness.
The main deets are on the flier above (which I happily collaborated on with J.Sole–or perhaps I should say–that he completely rocked up a few levels!), but here is the complete lineup of performers on both floors:
JEREMY SOLE, turntables
GLENN RED, turntables
DJ JAHNEKO, turntables–upstairs lounge
DJ ELIXIR, turntables–upstairs lounge
KAHLIL CUMMINGS, live percussion
JAHANNA BLUNT, featured dancer
DAUNTE FYALL, featured dancer
NATIVE SOL, featured vendor
ROCKY DAWUNI, host
CARY SULLIVAN, producer
Make plans to be there, lace up your boogie shoes, and as always…wear attire to perspire!
9PM – 2AM
TOWNHOUSE & DEL MONTE SPEAKEASY
52 Windward Circle
Check out our Facebook Event Page. See you there!
I’m both excited and nervous about this latest AFRO FUNKÉ show called ‘AFRICA RISING’. I’m very eager to be part of the bill (as part of the Afro Funké Sound System deejay duo with JEREMY SOLE) and to hear and see the other performers, which include my my friends ROCKY DAWUNI, DEXTER STORY & WONDEM and special guest, legendary Congolese-Belgian Afropop artist MARIE DAULNE of ZAP MAMA!! I think that the quality of the lineup evoked what I think is some of my best work as a graphic designer, this flier pictured above. Thanks to Jeremy for adding some clean polish work to it! The show, presented by Afro Funké and 89.9 KCRW, takes place under the stars on SATURDAY OCTOBER 15th at the historic FORD THEATRES in Hollywood. The show starts at 7pm, with doors open and picnicking at 5pm. Please spread the word and make plans to attend!
