Our final LA JUNTA summer event of 2016 falls on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH!! And we’re going out BIG with Los Angeles’ new but already beloved Selena tribute band, SELENAMOS! It takes place on the rooftop of our new home, DON CHENTE BAR-GRILL & LOUNGE in DTLA, right across from Staples Center. We’ll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Selena’s first gold record, which was also the first for any woman in Tejano music!

Here’s one of my latest flier designs, announcing the first LA JUNTA summer event:

LA JUNTA is back for our fourth summer of good music, good people and good times!! While the boys have been gigging steadily as guests at other events, we’ve missed coming together at good ol’ Fronteras Cantina in Alhambra and partying on the patio like we do!

For our summer kickoff, we’ve invited back the first band we ever worked with at La Junta, way back when we were a fledgling event in east Pasadena. The fellas from LA CHAMBA return with their East Los Angeles working class take on the pyschedelic cumbia chicha sounds that originated in Peru. As with all La Junta events, it will be a heavy dancing affair!

The date is SUNDAY JUNE 26th…start breaking in your summer dancing shoes!!

summer fling.

LA JUNTA returns on SUNDAY JUNE 26th with our fourth summer series! We’ll be back at FRONTERAS MEXICAN GRILL & CANTINA, but for only four events instead of the eight that we’ve done each of our last two summers there. Instead, we’re working on producing events on a bigger and better scale! It’s 2016 and the time is now to keep reaching upward and soaring! Here’s the splash flier I created that we debuted on our social media channels today to let everyone know that we’re back soon and we’re looking forward to a fun and colorful summer!

enchanté.

Much love and gratitude to the homie, my dude outta Chamonix Mont-Blanc, my French connection, Seb(astien) ‘DJ Krimi’ Benisti, for airing my Me Llevaba (Glenn Red ‘Rub-a-Dub’ remix ft. Todd Simon) by QUITA PENAS on his ‘RADIO KRIMI’ 24/7 online radio broadcast. Not only does it fall among wonderful company on the list photographed here, but every Radio Krimi mix and playlist bursts with amazing music, carefully curated by Seb and his wide but discerning tastes. Do tune in to RADIO KRIMI as often as you can!

And be sure to check out the QUITA PENAS Remixes by my crew LA JUNTA SOUND SYSTEM on the QUITA PENAS BANDCAMP PAGE.

JUST RELEASED!!
It’s been about a year since my partners in crime, DEGRUVME and YUKICITOm and I from LA JUNTA SOUND SYSTEM began working on remixes of three tunes by our friends from local Los Angeles (Riverside) band QUITA PENAS. This past Tuesday April 12th, however, the time was right to put the remixes out into the world, into the ethers, and into the hearts of our mutual fans, and hopefully into some new ears! Much love and gratitude to the fellas of Quita Penas and to Samuel Martinez of desmadre.com for the supafresh album art.

mad love.

Back in February of 2014, our young little LA JUNTA family, fresh off our first summer season and a pretty successful, more recent December one-off event, rolled northward on California Interstate Highway 5 to Fresno with our new friends, the band SALT PETAL. We were invited by the DULCE UPFRONT crew to be the headliners at their monthly PINCHE music event. We enjoyed a wonderful time together, getting to know the band and seeing them perform their music for the first time. Since, we’ve worked with them on a few occasions and they’ve toured the up and down the coast and have recorded a brand new album. TONIGHT, they’re back at DTLA’s beloved LA CITA BAR! La Junta’s DJ degruvme and yours truly will be showing the dance floor a little love between sets, via the turntables.

I’m also looking forward to seeing East LA rockeros ¡APARATO! live for the first time. The band is fronted by our good amigo, the jarana-wielding, sometimes maniacal metalhead, ALEXANDRO D. HERNÁNDEZ GUTIÉRREZ. He and degruvme recently collaborated on the tune “Crooked Smile” for degruvme’s new Echoes of a Dream EP, a synth-pop banger that might’ve been an 80s classic had it been released in that era. However, the song holds its own now, and I can’t wait to see degruvme, Alex and Aparato perform it live tonight!

CA(FAM).

On Saturday January 30th, the La Junta Sound System were invited to play records out in the courtyard of the Craft & Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) on Los Angeles’ Museum Row/Miracle Mile/Wilshire District. Though Yukicito was missing in action due to his extensive preparations for upcoming samba performances in Brazil, I was with the ‘mano DEGRUVME from 11am-5pm mixing everything from soul jazz to future soul, cumbia to samba, disco to nu-disco, highlife to afrobeat, Stevie to Marvin to Michael, and more! We received some great feedback and–dare I say!–compliments from the CAFAM staff as well as museumgoers. We also were asked for quite a few La Junta business cards, while Degruvme even sent some lucky guests on their ways with a free copy of his brand new ECHOES OF A DREAM EP. Below are just a few shots I snapped as we were setting up shop for the day. Much love to CAFAM’s SASHA ALI (aka MISS MODULAR RADIO) for the invitation, plus sincere personal thanks to some friends that came through to peep the exhibitions and hang for bit: M’DAYA& SHAWN, SHEILA G, DARRELL & (MEESH)ELLE, TAMARA, and ROBERTO.
