This Friday March 6th is a special one as Marina Soul Club LA hosts our first ‘inter-yacht’ exchange with the ladies of Twin Harbors Long Beach. All this leads up to our 1-year anniversary at Melody Wine Bar happening in April! As always, pull in and drop your anchor for a while to dine, sip, converse and enjoy the finest in 70s soft rock, breezy jazz, lite disco, mellow 80s, island grooves and coastal soul on vinyl. It’s also Happy Hour all night long, and 15% of food sales are donated to local Lockwood Elementary. Be sure to order any of the entrees by Adia Pasta and from the selection of natural wines curated by the house.

My new pet project, Marina Soul Club, convenes once again this Friday evening from 7-11 at the lovely Melody Wine Bar in East Hollywood. Above is the official logo that I created to brand the event. I’ve also started a separate Instagram page for the event: @marinasoulclub_la. Be sure to follow this handle for all things yacht rock, 70s soft rock, breezy jazz, lite disco, tropicalia and tiki/exotica sounds. It’s also ‘First Fridays’ social night in the Virgil Village neighborhood where the venue is located, AND 15% of all food sales will benefit local Lockwood Elementary School. Hope to see you this Friday night!

I’m back in East Hollywood CA’s ‘Virgil Village’ enclave on Friday April 5th from 7-11pm for just the third installment of what I’m half-heartedly calling ‘Melody Yacht Club.’ Since my appearances have only begun to have regularity, I haven’t fully decided to brand it with a name that I will forever love and remember with deep feelings of nostalgia. Maybe by my next post.
However, a friend and I have already been bouncing taglines back and forth, so things are getting off the ground. Some are borrowed verbatim from the internet but all are plays on existing band names, song titles, movie phrases and what not. Here are a few of my favorites so far:
“Drop it like it’s yacht” (already in circulation, but thanks @suaverob1 for sharing!)
“Some like it yacht” (courtesy of TMS!)
“Hit me with your best yacht” (courtesy of TMS!)
“Jenny from the yacht” (courtesy of TMS!)
“Talk yachty to me” (courtesy of TMS!)
and my personal fave…
“It’s gettin’ yacht in hurr” (this one’s mine!)
If a great tagline I could use pops into your mind after having read those above, email me if you’re so inclined! I’ll totally give you a shout on any future posts.
Anyway, this event also coincides with Virgil Village’s First Fridays community social night, so I’m looking forward to some great energy around the neighborhood and inside Melody Wine Bar. Along with their Happy Hour wines available all night, it’s a FOG Pop-up kitchen night fogdining.comfeaturing two great chefs creating their own takes on contemporary American dishes.

Come sail away!
I’m eagerly looking forward to being back at Eric Tucker’s ‘Melody LA’ restaurant in Silverlake on Saturday September 22nd, this time with another longtime deejay homie–BABY BUBBA–from Chinatown’s ‘Soul Sessions’ fame and, more recently, from his eclectic mixtape series currently in its fourth volume, Clean Living. While we’ve shared the decks a handful of times in soul, funk, hip-hop or world music contexts, turning yacht rock records will be a first for us and I’m pretty he’s as stoked as I am. Expect all the favorites–Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross, Ambrosia, Player and the like==mixed in with some deeper and possibly just as cool, smooth and soulful cuts from lesser known artists of the day. Come dine and sip as we sail on wax all evening long. Here’s to easy breezy smooth sailing…hope you can join us.
