Just posting up some images that I did spotlighting the La Junta crew for a recent promo campaign for our summer event series. Here we are. This is us.
Thursday, April 7th, marks the beginning of AFRO FUNKÉ’s third ‘post-weekly’ year, meaning that we’ve continued to host our event beyond its incarnation as a legendary Thursday evening fixture on the west side of Los Angeles. Since stepping back and ending that 10-year long tenure in late 2013, we’ve given ourselves room to breathe, to reimagine, and to grow. In 2014 and 2015, we were able to throw a handful of very well-attended one-off/’pop-up’ events in parts of the city beyond our original Santa Monica locale, and this year looks to be even brighter! Please come out and reunite with Jeremy, Cary, Rocky and me this week at our beloved and true home, ZANZIBAR! We’ll have some live dance performances and drumming, as well as live painting on the stage. Say YEAH YEAH!
This is the flier that I designed, to which Jeremy lent his golden touch before letting it fly. We’re a pretty good team behind the turntables too 😉
I’m extremely proud of my La Junta brethren ‘degruvme’ for putting in the work into making one of his dreams come true! He’s produced his first collection of tunes with some of his favorite Angeleno vocalists and we’re ready to throw the ep release and concert in DTLA on FRIDAY JANUARY 22nd!! All five singers will be on hand performing their respective songs live, with a special dance performance and excellent deejay support from VNC & F-Cast aka “The Funky Brewsterz”, as well as Yukicito and yours truly of the La Junta Sound System. The fliers I created are below:

LA WEEKLY gave the upcoming AFRO FUNKÉ event a little (but much appreciated!) love in this morning’s online music posts. Take a minute to check out the gracious blurb by Lina Lecaro.
And if you think you might make it, here’s the Facebook Event Page for DECEMBER 3rd’s AFRO FUNKÉ getdown. We would love to be with you on this special night!
I’ve been asked to be the deejay for the debut of a new dance night at THE CONTINENTAL CLUB in Downtown Los Angeles, happening on THURSDAY OCTOBER 1ST! The event is called THE CONFESSIONAL. I was booked for the event based on my musical style behind the decks at Afro Funké, so expect the same blend of raw, heavy, rhythmic and soulful goodness with some sharp, tight and clean edges for a night out in the heart of our urban metropolis. Come out for a great time at this classic cocktail lounge and let’s conversate deeply in music and movement.
FREE with RSVP at the Eventbrite link.
Here’s the new flyer and Facebook event banner for March 14th’s ‘THE /PUR /BLEND EXPERIENCE’. It’s our second installment, this time on a Friday night instead of a Thursday, at SÉTA DINE:LOUNGE in Uptown Whittier. I’ll put out the formal post in a few days. The imagery is a bit different for this event since it’s not so much a world music foray, but I enjoyed working on it and learned some new techniques…
We’re checkin’ in to say hello in the middle of us all digging our soles into the earth and steadying ourselves for everything 2014 has begun to bring. Reyes, Glenn and Daniel want to once again thank you and all of our Capricorn friends who celebrated birthdays for making our special opening event at Trópico de Nopal in January so amazing. WHAT A NIGHT!
The first Wednesday of February is fast approaching, so it’s also time to invite you to gather with us back at Eastside Luv Wine Bar for the next ECLÉCTICA! Some special guests from Fresno will be making the trip down the Grapevine to share the magic of their ‘DULCE UP-FRONT’ events. We’re looking forward to a night of new sounds and a return to having live painting in the room. We’d love to see you all again!
Ecléctica takes place on the first Wednesday of every month at Eastside Luv. This space is not only the coolest spot in Boyle Heights but it makes the best cheladitos and has one of the fattest sound systems around.
