I’m super excited to have been asked to play records at this second coming of the EXTRA ANCESTRAL show, hosted by LA’s young percussion master, Kahlil Cummings and his CAPOFRESH brand. The evening features Kahlil’s new CAPOFRESH ENSEMBLE project, a ‘supergroup’ made up of some of his favorite local players, as well as BLOCO OBINI, the all-female bloco afro he both leads and instructs. As an extra treat, all the way from Australia, Mr. Quetzal Guerrero aka QVLN, joins the festivities as the evening’s special guest performer! Dance performances by Daunte Fyall, Jahanna Blunt, Rachel Hernandez and Rosangela Silvestre round out the evening but who knows, there are probably more surprises in store!
Check the Facebook Event Page for all the info, and see Farah Sosa’s photographs from the very first show back in February. This night will be just as amazing!
Can’t wait to get behind the turntables for my first time mixing at the Teragram Ballroom! Check out this upcoming show on Saturday May 26th. I go back quite a ways with the leaders of both bands, as Rocky is one of the founders of LA’s Afro Funké event for which I serve as one of the resident deejays, while Afrolicious frontman Joe McGuire was one of the creators and resident deejays of the party bearing the same name as his band, which was a staple of San Francisco’s weekly music scene for seven years. Afro Funké and Afrolicious were definitely contemporaries and became close kin in our respective missions to showcase deep pan-African music on the west coast, with both events happening simultaneously every Thursday evening. I’m thrilled at any chance I have to play my favorite African tunes!

P.S. I also put together this flier 😉
About a week ago, I was hired to do a campaign poster–my first. The colors inset into the California image are those of Uganda. While the office is nothing but a blip on the global political scale, except for a background color swap I was happy to nail the design on the first try. Good luck to the candidate!
So, right on schedule and in keeping with past summers, I’ve managed to pull my disappearing act again. I don’t think I’ve posted anything for about two months or so. If any of you have ventured over to the sidebar of this blog, you may have noticed that I usually keep my deejaying schedule pretty up-to-date. A quick glance would tell you that I’ve been a pretty busy dude. In addition to preparing music and doing the requisite promotion duties for those respective events each week, I keep my days busy making fliers for both my gigs and for other peoples’ parties. Here is a small handful of some flier work I’ve done this summer. You may see me post a couple of these images again, along with descriptions of the particular event as they get close. Maybe I’ll see you at a few 😉
