music mix | marina soul club 020

Happy Spring, All!

Right on time for bright, warm and sunny days here on the west coast, Mix #020 of my Marina Soul Club series is now up on mixcloud.com!

If you haven’t yet checked it out, I started this collection of music mixes in April 2020 as an extension of the monthly dinner & wine events my crew and I were hosting at Melody Wine Bar in Los Angeles before the pandemic. Along with ‘Executive Officer (XO), Ryan Baysa, we set out to keep the music that we love alive.

Marina Soul Club is the place in our hearts where the cool smooth rock & soul music of the late 70s and early 80s co-exist, via both the widely popular and more obscure selections of the era. The mixes simultaneously aim to skip along the surface and take deep dives into the material, recalling the hits as well as shining some light on the many hidden treasures overlooked by mainstream radio in those days.

It’s soft rock, breezy jazz, lite disco, mellow 80s, island grooves and coastal vibes throughout. Yacht and nyacht for those who know the lingo. 15 songs, 57 minutes long. This latest playlist finds the music of the artists listed below together, as we think they should be 🙂 Enjoy the music and the sunshine state of mind!

mind melting | aka NEW BRAZIL MIX!!

I’m honored to have recently been invited to share a guest deejay set on Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles by one of my favorite tastemakers on the LA airwaves, Mr. Michael Barnes. Michael has hosted his popular and eclectic music program on both of the city’s main public radio platforms, 89.9 FM KCRW and KPFK 90.7 FM, a show and accompanying blog both titled Melting Pot Radio. He’s currently on hiatus from doing his programs regularly, however in January and February thus far, he’s filled in for regular ‘One Track Mind’ host Kristi Lomax, who’ll be making her return to her long-time post at the station very soon.

The links below will allow you to stream and/or download each hour of the show. The first link takes you to Michael’s New Orleans/Mardi Gras inspired first hour (including a brief interview with yours truly), while the second link features my guest deejay set–a jazzy and funky take on Brazil, just in time for Carnaval week. You won’t find much of the typical samba or batucada sounds here, but rather the set highlights a handful of genres just as rhythmic and beautiful as the country’s more prominent sounds. Plus, what’s really cool about this appearance on One Track Mind is that it is in large part thanks to Kristi’s show back around the turn of the millenium that I learned to love Afrobeat and pan-African genres, helping set me on the path to all that I enjoy as a world music deejay/selector/collector.

I’ve also included the tracklist for my set below. Click and enjoy!
