tropi-cal livin’.

Much love to the good folks of CUMBIATRON & Mezcal Lounge Fresno, ¡WEPA! & Deer Lodge Ojai, SONIDO TROPICAL & SLO Brew Rock San Luis Obispo for showing us fun and memorable times during last weekend’s La Junta Tropi-Cal Weekend Tour. Over the three days, we traveled about 750 miles, met some really cool people, hit three parties with fun music, and had plenty of terrific food along the way (I think the resounding favorite among the crew was the BBQ dinner thrown for us by DJ Elixir of WEPA and his wife Adriana, seen in the featured image–those ribs though!). We also really loved the hard-driving cumbia sonidera deejay sets by El Selector, Don del Toro and Jalinche of the Cumbiatron crew, as well as all of the mesmerizing cumbia dancers who swung all night long at Mezcal Lounge. Sunday’s afternoon brunch gig in SLO was the perfect way to end the weekend and our tour. Though quite windy at times, it was a sunny and relaxed affair where we got to spend Easter outdoors at a large brewery with a brunch buffet, beer/mosas, cornhole, ping pong and other games. We also got to stretch out musically, adding disco, soul, rock and a few other types of sounds to our regularly scheduled tropical repertoire. Great fun.

Anyway, here are a few pics from the weekend…

Happy Spring, Friends ~

The sunny days in LA are giving us those feels and we’re getting ready to be out and about on warm nights heating up dance floors around the city. With our brother YUKICITO back in town, we’ve got a special one lined up for our next PIÑA night on Friday April 12th, as we finally get the chance to celebrate the recent release of his first original recordings–the ‘One’ EP out now on Wonderwheel Recordings.

In addition to his deejays sets, Yuki will be performing live music from his new EP alongside a few of the musicians/vocalists featured on the project:

La Junta crew and I are back from a fun, wonderful, and inspiring trip to Tucson, AZ. It was our first time performing as a crew outside of California, having accepted a gracious invitation to do an unprecedented deejay crew takeover of Tucson’s signature Latin music event, El Tambó. Meeting the Tambó familia, sharing the music we love and celebrating life with so many good people of Tucson were definitely the highlights of our journey. It was a true honor to be part of an event that operates with exactly the same ethos in terms of music, community and celebration as our own.

We were also let in on the secret that everyone there knows: Tucson is an amazing place! In the short time that we stayed and in the limited amount of ground that we covered, their city showed us beautiful art in just about every space that we visited, amazing views of nature, fantastic food (and beer!) and friendly, interesting people. We fell in love with Tucson and can’t wait to return!

La Junta and I wish to thank everyone in Tucson whom we met and made us feel so welcome, especially Dirtyverbs, Quiahui, Jackie, Q and Humble Lianess of El Tambó, and the staff at Hotel Congress. Shout outs as well to our LA familia that drove out to join us all the way in AZ: Paloma, Unholy LA, Aldo, Maria. Can’t wait to see you again, Tucson!!

alley oop!

Above is the first set of photos from last Friday’s opening event of Old Pasadena‘s Day of the Dead celebration titled ‘SALSA ON THE ALLEY.’

Gratitude to the fine people at Old Pasadena’s management office for providing the awesome space and resources (including people power, of course!) that made for such an amazing evening! Much love to my fam LA JUNTA and the band CUBA RUMBA for the fantastic music throughout the short but jam-packed few hours we had together. Extra thanks to our Salsa instructors and featured performers from PRESTIGE DANCE & FINE ARTS, as well as to our conguero SÓLIDO and saxophonista RUBÉN for their tasteful accompaniment during our deejay sets.

Of course, heartfelt thanks to the nearly five hundered beautiful dancers and supporters who showed up en masse on Big Bang Theory Way and filled it from just about one end to the other. Can’t wait until next time!
